Large range of prices and performance:
Nice rims and wide tires can significantly improve the appearance of a car – and not only the tuning scene knows this. For the compact class, there are 18-inch wheels with 225/40 tires. In addition to the visual gain, tire manufacturers also promise good performance and promote the tires as "sports tires" that are supposed to offer above-average grip and are even approved for speeds up to 300 km/h (speed index Y) or 270 km/h (speed index W). ADAC checked whether the tires can really convince and tested 18 tires in the size 225/40 R 18. The range ranged from premium manufacturers to budget tires, which is why the prices vary. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive tires is a whopping 280 euros per set. There is also a large spread in performance: rarely has the range between the best and worst tire models been as great as in this test. Many of the tires performed well, but three are not recommended. One of them even failed completely.
11 out of 18 summer tires are good.
It is very pleasing that a large number of tires are highly recommended: in total, 11 out of 18 tires were rated "good".
For the first time, two models managed to achieve a very good rating in the driving safety section (both 1.5): the test winners Continental SportContact 7 and Bridgestone Potenza Sport.
Together with the environmental rating (30 percent of the overall rating), the Conti achieves an overall rating of 1.8 and the Bridgestone 1.9. Both tires perform excellently on dry roads. They are surprisingly grippy, drive extremely precisely and are absolutely safe even during critical driving maneuvers. The same is true on wet roads: Equipped with Conti and Bridgestone tires, the test vehicle navigates the wet track with almost no effort.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 are also very convincing. Both tires also earned a one-point score (both 1.9). Michelin primarily because it achieved the best environmental balance among good tires and is among the top in wear and mileage.
These other seven tires are also "good" and therefore highly recommended: Vredestein Ultrac Pro, Yokohama Advan Sport V107, Firestone Firehawk Sport, Falken Azenis FK520, Nexen N Fera Sport, Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 and Toyo Proxes Sport 2.
Recommended: Four mid-range tires.
There are four tires in the middle class with a "satisfactory" rating. In the opinion of the ADAC, they are recommended, but in terms of driving safety and partly also in terms of environmental balance, they cannot match the top tires. Here it is worth looking at the individual ratings and focusing on personal preferences. For example, the Ceat SportDrive has weaknesses in the wet, but is good in the dry, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 has good wet grip, but on the dry and is not perfect with the expected mileage. The Nokian Tyres Powerproof 1 also behaves well in the wet, but with increasing heat it deteriorates significantly and the dry is imprecise. The Giti GitiSport S2 has the biggest deficit in the wet and also shows increased wear: With a service life of 33,600 kilometers, it has the shortest service life.
