When to switch to summer tires

The same limit as in autumn, only in the opposite direction: above about 7 °C, the winter mixture starts to soften and loses accuracy. In Slovakia, this is usually the end of March to April — just wait until the last night frosts pass.

Driving on winter tires in the summer is not prohibited, but it is expensive and dangerous. The soft compound wears out significantly faster on hot roads and the braking distance is longer — exactly the opposite of what you would expect.

What tread depth is still enough?

The legal minimum for summer tires is 1.6 mm . However, it is really just a minimum — below 3 mm, the ability to drain water from under the tire drops sharply and the risk of aquaplaning increases faster than it might seem. If you have a season with highway kilometers ahead, it is worth considering replacing them earlier.

What does the EU label say?

On a summer tire, the three most important data on the label are: rolling resistance (affects consumption), wet grip (braking distance in the rain) and noise in decibels. The A–E scale looks like a small difference, but between A and C in the wet there are usually several meters of braking distance at 80 km/h.
