ADAC Winter Tire Test 215/55 R17 2024

We bring you the results of the ADAC winter tire test 2024 for the 17-inch size ! As with the 16-inch test, the data did not bring any major surprises. What is even more impressive is that Goodyear and Dunlop took the top two spots, while Vredestein continues to confirm its quality in winter tire tests with the Wintrac Pro model (not the newer Plus version).

Surprisingly, the other brand of the Continental concern – Semperit – directly outperformed the TS 870 P. At the opposite end of the scoreboard is the Davanti Wintoura +, which achieved the worst rating in both wet and snow grip – which is remarkable in itself. It is also interesting that the Michelin brand did not appear in this test at all.

In the dry category, the Kumho WinterCraft WP52 achieved the best results, stopping after just 42.1 meters. Several other models performed very well, with their braking distances ranging from 42.9 to 44 meters. Conversely, the Firestone Winterhawk 4 recorded the longest braking distance, stopping after 45.7 meters, which indicates significant differences in tire performance when braking on dry roads.

In the wet braking test, the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 achieved the best result, stopping after just 34.2 meters. The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P, Dunlop Winter Sport 5 and Firestone Winterhawk 4 also performed very well, with braking distances ranging from 34.6 to 34.7 meters. At the opposite end of the scale was the Davanti Wintoura +, which needed up to 41.3 meters to stop – clearly demonstrating the importance of braking performance on wet roads.

When braking on wet concrete, the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 tire achieved the best results, stopping after 37.6 meters. It was closely followed by the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P (38.2 m) and the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 (37.7 m). Here too, the Davanti Wintoura + tire was the worst, stopping after 46.8 meters .

In the category of resistance to longitudinal aquaplaning, the Hankook Winter i*cept RS3 dominated, maintaining grip up to a speed of 80.5 km/h. The Firestone Winterhawk 4 (78.6 km/h) and Semperit Speed-Grip 5 (78.7 km/h) also performed very well. On the other hand, the Davanti Wintoura + and Triangle WinterX TW401 performed the worst, losing grip at 68.3 km/h.

In the snow braking category, the Kenda Wintergen 2 KR501 achieved the best results, stopping after just 9.3 meters. The Dunlop Winter Sport 5 (9.6 m) and Triangle WinterX TW401 (9.5 m) also performed well. The Davanti Wintoura + performed the worst, needing up to 11.0 meters .

In the snow traction test, the Vredestein Wintrac Pro came in first place with a rating of 238 DN. The Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3, Hankook Winter i*cept RS3, Kenda Wintergen 2 KR501, Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 and Triangle WinterX TW401 also achieved very good results, ranging between 230 and 234 DN. On the other hand, the Davanti Wintoura + came in worst with a value of only 202 DN, which indicates significant differences in snow traction between the tested tires.

In the ice braking category, the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 achieved the best results, stopping after just 16.1 meters. It was closely followed by the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P (16.6 m) and the Vredestein Wintrac Pro (16.8 m). On the other hand, the Davanti Wintoura + tire came in last, with the worst grip and needed more than 5 meters longer braking distance, even at a speed of just 20 km/h .

The results of the ADAC 2024 winter tire test in the 17-inch size show that there are significant differences between brands in behavior on different surfaces. The best ratings were given to premium brands such as Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli, Continental and Vredestein, which were able to offer balanced performance on dry, wet, snow and ice.

An interesting surprise was that the Semperit brand overtook its "parent" model, the Continental TS 870 P, while the Davanti Wintoura + ended clearly at the tail of the test - with the worst grip on wet roads, snow and ice.

For drivers, this means one thing: when choosing winter tires, it pays to rely on proven brands with consistent performance in all conditions. If you're looking for the best winter tire 2024 for 17" wheels, according to the ADAC test, the clear favorites are the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3, Dunlop Winter Sport 5 and Vredestein Wintrac Pro, while the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 and Continental WinterContact TS 870 P also offer top safety and stability.
