Michelin CrossClimate 3 & 3 Sport vs Pilot Sport 5 vs Primacy 5

A new test by auto motor und sport magazine compared the performance of the new Michelin CrossClimate 3 and CrossClimate 3 Sport all-season tires with traditional summer touring and summer sports tires. The test vehicle was a Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport and the tire size 225/40 R18 was used in all disciplines.

The following tires were included in the test:

  • Michelin Pilot Sport 5 (ultra-performance summer tire),
  • Michelin Primacy (premium summer touring tire),
  • Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport (ultra-performance all-season tire),
  • Michelin CrossClimate 3 (premium all-season touring tire).

The aim of the test was to quantify the differences in dry and wet performance between new generation summer and all-season tires.

Test results: dry and wet conditions

On dry roads, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 summer tire achieved the best results, recording the fastest lap time (1:16.9) and the shortest braking distance from 100 km/h (36.8 m) .
The Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport demonstrated very decent performance on dry roads – with a time of 1:18.84 and a braking distance of 38.4 m, it came close to the Michelin Primacy summer touring tire.
The standard CrossClimate 3 was the weakest in this discipline, with the slowest lap time (1:21.0) and the longest braking distance (39.7 m), clearly showing the differences in dry performance.

On wet roads, the order changed significantly in favor of the specialized summer tires. The Pilot Sport 5 again dominated with a time of 1:37.41 and a braking distance from 80 km/h of 30.8 m. The Primacy was very competitive, achieving a time of 1:38.0 and a braking distance of 31.7 m .
The gap between summer and all-season tires widened significantly in the wet. The CrossClimate 3 Sport recorded a time of 1:44.13, while the standard CrossClimate 3 achieved 1:49.68. This was matched by longer braking distances – 34.7 m and 37.4 m, which clearly confirms the significant advantage of summer tires in wet grip .
