AutoBild Winter tire test for sports cars 225/40 R18 2023

In the 2023 AutoBild Sportscars winter tire test, tires were evaluated on a Toyota GR Yaris in size 225/40 R18 in various disciplines: dry braking, dry handling, wet braking, wet handling, aquaplaning (straight and cornering), snow braking, snow traction, snow handling, snow slalom, noise and rolling resistance.

The Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 proved to be particularly strong in the wet – it came in 1st place in both wet braking and wet handling. It also performed very well in the snow, where it came in 3rd place in traction, handling and snow slalom. The downside was the higher rolling resistance (7th place), which suggests a compromise between excellent grip and efficiency. On the dry, the performance was good, but not leading – it came in 4th place in both dry braking and handling. On the positive side, the low noise level (2nd place), which contributes to a comfortable ride.

On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 performed excellently on snow – it was the best in braking and traction on snow, demonstrating excellent grip and control in winter conditions. In addition, the Michelin achieved the lowest noise level of all the tires tested, which means a quieter and more comfortable ride. It was not the best in other disciplines, but it delivered consistently good performance in both dry and wet conditions. Rolling resistance data was not provided for this model, but it is a factor that can affect fuel consumption and the overall value of the tire.

The results show that the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is the ideal choice for drivers who want to be confident, especially on wet roads, while the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 is perfect for those looking for maximum safety and grip on snow along with a quiet ride.
