Champion on snow and treacherous gamble on water
Looking for the ideal all-year footwear that can handle scorching asphalt as well as a winter calamity? Manufacturers must constantly make compromises with all-season tires – adding traction on snow often comes at the expense of performance on wet roads. A major test of ten popular tires in the widely used size 225/45 R17 (tested on a VW Golf) revealed which brands handled this balance the best.
The undisputed king of winter conditions turned out to be the Michelin CrossClimate 2, while on wet roads and in overall balance, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, Hankook Kinergy 4S2, and Vredestein Quatrac Pro dominated.
Snow: Michelin's unique performance and Bridgestone's flop
- Class leader: Michelin CrossClimate 2 delivered a dominant performance. In traction properties, braking distance, and handling on snow, it created its own category and reached the level of true winter tires.
- Strong runner-up: Second place went to the Kleber Quadraxer 2 (part of the Michelin group), followed by a very balanced trio of Hankook, Goodyear, and Continental.
- Snow flop: At the opposite end finished the Bridgestone WeatherControl A005 Evo tire, which lagged behind the best time by more than 15 seconds. On snow, it works only as an "emergency spare to get you home."
Wet roads: A wake-up call for cheap rubber and Vredestein's comeback
- Clear dominance on water: The asymmetric tread of the Vredestein Quatrac Pro dominated both lap time and braking distance on wet surfaces. Close behind finished Hankook, with an excellent first lap, and Goodyear, which showed absolutely perfect balance between understeer and oversteer.
- A gamble with cheap tires: The budget tire Tomket Allyear 3 completely failed on water. It suffered from uncontrollable oversteering skids and lost a frightening 12 seconds in lap time.
- Paying the price for snow performance: The snow champion, Michelin CrossClimate 2, lost some of its former dominance on water – it did offer safe understeering characteristics, but lacked quicker steering response.
Dry roads: Bridgestone's surprising comeback
- Best driving dynamics: On dry asphalt, the Bridgestone WeatherControl A005 Evo returned to the top, offering the best steering feel, a sporty character, and excellent grip.
- Dry braking: In braking distance, Michelin kept the lead, closely followed by Hankook and Bridgestone.
- Disappointment: The Vredestein Quatrac Pro, despite its excellent performance on water, felt rubbery and lacked sensitivity on dry roads.
Comfort, noise, and fuel consumption
- Noise and comfort: The quietest tire in the cabin turned out to be the Falken EUROALL SEASON AS210 (which was also the cheapest premium option in the test), with differences between premium tires under 1dB.
- Rolling resistance and range: In the fuel consumption test, the Bridgestone and Pirelli Cinturato AllSeason SF2 achieved the lowest rolling resistance.
Verdict: Which tire is best for you?
- For mountainous, snowy regions: Michelin CrossClimate 2 (the unbeaten king of snow).
- For milder winters with a lot of rain: Vredestein Quatrac Pro or Bridgestone WeatherControl A005 Evo.
- Best all-round tires for the whole year: Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 and Hankook Kinergy 4S2.
- Warning: Avoid cheap all-season tires (such as Tomket) – their unpredictable behavior on water poses a high risk.
