All-Season Tire Test 2026 (AvD): There are many quality tires, but not all are worth buying
The German automobile club AvD (Automobilclub von Deutschland) has published a new all-season tire test for 2026. Together with the testing facility TEMPOTIRE, it tested 12 models in the size 225/50 R17 on snow, wet and dry surfaces. The test included premium brands, mid-range brands, and budget tires. The results show that all-season tires are better today than ever before, but the price trap still exists.
How AvD tested
To keep the results as close to reality as possible, AvD purchased all the tires anonymously from a regular retailer, not from manufacturers. The test vehicle was a BMW 3 Series, and all tires were in the size 225/50 R17.
The main focus was on safety:
- snow: braking, traction, and winter driving characteristics,
- wet: braking, cornering grip, and handling,
- dry: braking and stability.
Economy and environmental impact were also evaluated. AvD expresses the results using a clear 5-star system. The best tires receive the AvD quality seal, and the club also announces a winner in terms of price-performance ratio.
Test winner: Continental AllSeasonContact 2
The Continental AllSeasonContact 2 took the top spot. It achieved very good results in all disciplines and is exceptionally well-balanced. On snow, wet, and dry surfaces, it offers the highest level of safety. For drivers who want a worry-free tire for the whole year, this is a safe choice.
Close behind the winner: Bridgestone and Pirelli
Very close behind the winner came the Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6 and Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3. Both have strong overall performance, but they fell short of the winner in some disciplines.
The overall rating of "very good" was also achieved by:
- Michelin CrossClimate 3
- Dunlop All Season 2
These two are also among the highly recommended tires.
Best price-performance ratio: Hankook Kinergy 4S2
If you're looking at price, AvD recommends the Hankook Kinergy 4S2. Overall, it achieved good to very good results and is cheaper than the premium competition.
It does have one drawback: it lost points in the ecological criterion of transport distance. Most Hankook tires for Europe are manufactured at a plant in Hungary, but the tested unit came from Asia.
The test thus confirms that the most expensive premium tire is not the only good choice. Quality mid-range tires are a fully viable alternative today, provided they match how and where you drive.
Watch out for these tires
At the bottom of the ranking, the differences are significant:
- The Giti GitiAllSeason AS2 is only conditionally recommended due to weaker results.
- The Kingboss AS365 4-Seasons had shortcomings in several disciplines, and AvD labeled it as not recommended.
Conclusion: the overall quality of all-season tires is high, but differences between models still exist. When it comes to a component that your safety depends on, it's worth looking at the detailed test results and not buying based on price alone.
